"Are you considering the purchase of a DnD dice set? Whether you are new to RPGs and this is your first set ever, or if you've never even rolled 20-sided dice, we have some helpful information for you."

If you're a seasoned veteran and you just want to add to your collection, the following information should be helpful as well. Then there are those who want to start with fresh dice as they embark on a new adventure with a new character.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to purchase a dice set for your favorite RPG, here are some things to consider.

Variety

There are so many dice sets out there, it boggles the mind. If you already have a set of dice, you might opt for something different this time around. Perhaps you are looking for something flashy for that rakish bard or maybe something understated yet distinguished for your paladin. Whatever it is, expand your horizons!

Quality

This may seem like a no-brainer, there are vast differences in the quality of dnd dice sets available today. Good quality dice will be well balanced with consistent coloring and finish.

The corners and sides of the dice should be even, and they should roll randomly. The paint in the pips or numbers should be consistent and not wear off easily. Over thousands of rolls, these dice should hold up. Take some time to read reviews and purchase from a reputable, respected company.

Color

When you look at a dnd dice set, color might be one of the first things you take note of. Narrowing down your choices can be a real challenge! Do you want a set that mixes colors or is one primary solid color? What color pleases you the most? What color makes the most sense for your character and their personality? So many things to consider!

Readability

When it comes to readability, there can be a huge difference between dice sets. Though they can be a little challenging to read, there are some pretty extravagant decorative graphical elements and elaborate fonts on some sets. You probably want to be able to read them at a glance, so consider this carefully.

When it comes to readability, the following characteristics should be taken into consideration:

  • Decorative elements
  • Font and number size
  • Contrast

Material

Plastics are used to make most DnD dice sets. There is an endless variety of styles and colors, and they are reasonably durable and affordable. However, wood, metal, stone, and other materials can be used to make dice! While these options are usually more expensive that cheaper, plastic-based dice sets, they can be more durable and have much more elaborate designs and intricacies that plastics.

Size

This may come as a surprise to some but there is not one standard size when it comes to Dungeons & Dragons dice sets. And, sizes among the different dice themselves will vary within a set. Take the Star Core Metal Dice Set. The D20 is 20mm (which is fairly common for 20 sided dice), the D12 is 18mm, the D10s are 16mm, the D8 is 13mm, the D6 is 15mm, and the D4 is 16mm. Some sets will have larger 20 sided dice, others smaller. What works best for you and your playing situation?

Your Character

What kind of character will you be playing? Because your dice are a very integral, tactile, and visible part of the game, they add a lot to the imaginative experience and the atmosphere at the table.

For a sorcerer or wizard, something dark and mysterious might be the flavor you’re looking for. For a ranger or a druid, perhaps a little green with a hint of magic. Are you a fighter? What about a metal dice set that has seen some action? Have a character from the mines? Consider a dice set reminiscent of raw precious metal.
