Metal dice are currently a favorite of the D&D crowd. While it may seem like it’s only because of the beautiful designs on the surface, there is more to it. Metal dice offer both fashion and function in a package that’s very hard to resist.
Let’s go through the pros and cons of metal dice so you can make the right choice when looking for a metal dice set.
Pros
Metal Dice Offer Weight
Metal dice are heavier since they’re made from metal, obviously. However, they’re 4 to 5 times heavier (or more!) than plastic. That means that you can feel their weight and substance in your hand.
However, that’s not all. Quality manufacturing design results in fair and balanced sets. That means metal dice can be much fairer to play with which results in a more interesting game.
Metal Dice are Durable
In a lot of cases, metal dice are definitely more durable than plastic dice. They can fall from great heights and still survive. They can maintain their shape and thus are a purchase which will last for very long. However, metal dice can still be damaged which can mar their surfaces or unbalance them. We highly recommend using a dice tray like the Forged Dice Arena to store and protect your metal dice when rolling!
A Metal Dice Set Looks Cooler
Let’s be honest, metal dice than plastic ones. Not that plastic dice can’t look beautiful. However, metal dice can have matte or shiny finishes and can be decorated with a lot of different colors. They also have a surface which is much more aesthetically pleasing than plastic dice. Plus, their overall weight and heft just add to their cool allure.
Cons
Metal Dice Can Damage Your Playing Surface
Metal dice can definitely damage your playing surface if you’re not careful. This can be easily avoided if you’re a careful roller. However, if you are careless with your dice, you may see scratches, dents, and even smudges on your staging area.
Metal dice are also able to damage any figurines which you have on the playing surface. Hence, make sure that you exercise control and caution when you play with your metal dice set. At our table, dice trays are mandatory!
Metal Dice Don’t Roll As Far
Another criticism of metal dice is that they don’t roll as far as plastic dice. This typically an issue for people who think the randomness of a die is a result of the number of times it rotates across its surfaces. However, what truly determines a die’s randomness is its balance. So, while rolling a die across the room or table for dramatic flair might be fun for some people. Just know it has very little to do with the randomness of the results.
